Location: 92098 E, US-36, Deer Trail, CO 80105

Estimated Duration: 5-6 hours

Min/Max seats: 4 / 6

Practical Pistol Foundations is built for new and self-taught gun owners who want to become safer, more confident, and more knowledgeable with a pistol.

This is not a concealed carry permit class or a high-speed shooting course. The focus is simple: learn how your pistol works, how to handle it safely, how to build strong fundamentals, and how to keep training with purpose after class.

What You’ll Learn

In this course, students will work through a structured progression covering:

  • Firearm safety and range procedures
  • Basic pistol components and Cycles of Operation
  • Loading, unloading, and clear/safe procedures
  • Common pistol malfunctions and clearing malfunctions
  • Grip, stance, sight alignment & tracking, trigger control & manipulation and more.
  • Drawing from the holster whether IWB or OWB
  • How to train with purpose
  • Practical drills you can continue using on your own

The course is built to help you understand the “why” behind the skills—not just copy movements for a few hours and forget them later.

After Completion, You Should Be Able To:

  • Handle your pistol safely and confidently
  • Load, unload, and verify firearm status correctly
  • Understand the basic parts and function of your pistol
  • Recognize and clear common malfunctions
  • Apply the core fundamentals of pistol shooting
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot common shooting errors
  • Use dry-fire and live-fire drills to continue training after class

Required Gear:

  • Semi-automatic pistol (SIG P320 and SIG P320 variants not allowed). Accepted calibers: .22lr / .380 / 9mm / .40 / .45
  • If you have a red dot, please have them sighted in before attending. This will make the class run more smoothly.
  • Range bag or pistol case. (Pistol must be in it upon arrival)
  • Quality holster must fully cover the trigger guard. Preferably kydex-type. Serpa style holsters NOT ALLOWED.
  • Minimum of 3 magazines. More magazines keeps the class moving.
  • At least 1 magazine holster
  • Minimum of 300 rounds of ammunition. HANDLOADED AMMUNITION IS NOT ALLOWED.
  • Ear and Eye protection meant for range use. Highly recommend electronic / passive hearing protection to listen to range commands and instructions.

Recommended items:

  • For outdoor ranges:
    • Sunscreen / bug spray
    • Water and snacks
    • Camping / foldable chair
    • Proper clothing attire suitable for weather
    • Note taking material
    • Magazine loaders (loads magazines fast) like this one
    • Dump pouch

FAQ

Is this course right for complete beginners?

Yes. Practical Pistol Foundations was specifically designed for new gun owners, self-taught shooters, and anyone who wants a stronger understanding of safe and effective pistol use.

You do not need prior formal training. The course starts with firearm safety, pistol operation, and core fundamentals before progressing into practical shooting skills.

Will I actually learn how to use my pistol, or just shoot at targets?

You’ll do much more than simply put rounds on paper.

This course teaches you how your pistol works, how to safely handle and operate it, how to identify and clear common malfunctions, how to build solid shooting fundamentals, and how to continue improving after class through structured practice.

The goal is to help you understand the “why” behind the skills so you can continue developing long after the course ends.

What makes this different from a concealed carry class?

Concealed carry courses are typically focused on legal requirements and permit certification.

Practical Pistol Foundations focuses on building real firearm knowledge and shooting fundamentals. You’ll learn safe gun handling, pistol operation, marksmanship fundamentals, malfunction clearing, drawing from the holster, and practical drills that help you become a more capable and confident gun owner.

This course is about developing skills—not obtaining a permit.

What happens after the course is over?

Most students leave with more than just information.

You’ll leave with a framework for continued improvement, including drills, training concepts, and methods you can use during dry-fire and live-fire practice. Instead of wondering what to do during your next range trip, you’ll have a clear path forward.

The goal is to help you become your own coach and continue progressing long after the class ends.

Why are class sizes limited to only 4–6 students?

Small class sizes allow for significantly more individual coaching, feedback, and instructor attention.

Instead of being one student in a large group, you’ll receive direct observation and guidance throughout the day. This creates a safer learning environment, allows mistakes to be corrected sooner, and helps students progress faster than they typically would in larger classes.
